Considering a Hardwood Timber Benchtop?

Kitchen, Bathroom, Laundry, Bartops, Home or Business!
JPM can help you out!

If you are looking for a natural and warm material for your kitchen benchtop, hardwood is a great option. Hardwood timber is durable, beautiful and eco-friendly. It can add character and value to your kitchen. However, not all hardwoods are suitable for kitchen benchtops, and you need to consider factors such as colour, grain, durability and cost when choosing a hardwood species for your benchtop.

There are many hardwood species available in Australia. Some of the most popular hardwoods for kitchen benchtops are Blackbutt, Camphor Laurel, Spotted Gum, Silky Oak, Ironbark, African mahogany, Red gum, Blue gum, Grey gum & so many more. Some softer timbers that are also durable, slightly cheaper and are suitable as a benchtop include Bunyah pine, Norfolk pine, cypress pine, macrocarpa, and more.

To protect your hardwood benchtop from scratches, stains and moisture, you need to apply a coat of food-safe oil or wax, polyurethane or pure urethane varnish or even an epoxy coat. The finish is entirely up to your preference, but we are happy to offer advice on which would be most suited to your area and uses. Timber furnishings of any type, but especially benchtops, require maintenance. You may need to reapply the finishing coat every year or two, depending on the type of finish you choose and how much exposure to water and light it receives. This is the same for a table or any other timber furniture you may add to your home. To maintain your benchtop, you need to keep it clean and dry, and wipe up any spills as soon as possible. The care instructions will depend on the finish you choose but we can advise you of these.

The cost of your hardwood benchtop will depend on the species you choose, the size of your benchtop, the design of your benchtop, and whether you need installation. Generally speaking, hardwood benchtops are cheaper than quartz or stone benchtops, but more expensive than laminate or melamine benchtops.

There are so many options for you to consider. Whether you’d like live edge, square edge, whether you want to add a waterfall edge and so much more. At JPM, we are here to help from design, slab selection right up to installation and maintenance.

Here are some examples of benchtops we have done in the past. They really are a beautiful feature to any room of your home or business.
